Low Cost Recruitment for Solicitors – Ten Percent Unlimited
Ten-Percent Unlimited is a service offering unlimited recruitment for a set monthly fee. It was set up by us back in 2011 with the aim of making the use of a recruitment agency cost-effective in a time of great financial difficulties for all in the profession. It is still going strong – we have over 100 members – most of whom are sole practitioners or smaller sized law firms.

With the uncertainty of Brexit and the financial implications not yet clear, this service gives you set costs for your recruitment requirements and enables you to plan for the next 5 years.

The Unlimited Recruitment service offers law firms the chance to recruit as many permanent or locum candidates as needed over a period of 5 years in return for a monthly payment. There are no restrictions on numbers (although vacancies have to exist and we do operate a fair usage policy – so far never used) and no other costs. No other similar services exist in the recruitment industry.

For example in a 5 year period you may recruit a few locums for cover each year, a replacement conveyancing solicitor, a couple of legal secretaries, possibly a paralegal or two and have a look to expand the firm into a new area of law with an additional fee earner. All of this would cost considerable amounts in advertising and/or recruitment agency fees. However with Ten Percent Unlimited you simply pay a monthly fee for 60 months.

Advantages? Plenty – including fixed price recruitment, very large cost savings and access to a large bank of candidates.

Disadvantages? One. You have to commit to a full 5 years without an option to cancel and success cannot be guaranteed during this time (it would be impossible for any recruitment process to do this).

One of our recruitment consultants works full time on our Ten Percent Unlimited member firms’ recruitment needs and is always happy to talk about the service. If you would like a chat with Clare Fagan, please give her a ring on 0207 127 4343 or email clare.fagan@ten-percent.co.uk. www.tenpercentunlimited.co.uk.

Good Work/Life Balances and the Legal Profession – are they compatible?
I recently noticed an article online by one of our competitors (Douglas Scott) about work/life balances in the legal profession and how average hours worked have dropped dramatically since 2014. There is talk of agile working conditions, hot desks, plus Magic Circle firm Clifford Chance have an on-site gym and pool, a restaurant, delicatessen and coffee bar, televisions in their social areas and a wellness centre. The article notes that “these benefits encourage staff to really take advantage of their down time, or conduct informal meetings with colleagues to allow them time away from their desks”. Really?

Legal Recruitment News September 2016

Legal Job Market Update
The legal job market has been very interesting indeed over the last 8 weeks (our last report was on July 6th). Brexit, the Olympics, the Euro 2016 tournament and lots of annual leave for everyone has had an impact on recruitment.

(full article at: http://www.ten-percent.co.uk/legal-job-market-report-september-6th-2016/)

Locums – avoiding bad firms and bad locums
Ten-Percent Legal Recruitment handles both permanent and locum vacancies. We assist with locum assignments via our website www.interimlawyers.co.uk. Every locum we arrange work for is checked out and we get proof of ID, proof of residence, copies of practising certificates and attempt to get two references on file. Obtaining references for locums is increasingly difficult, caused mainly by a general reluctance from firms to express an opinion on the work carried out by a locum. This can be very frustrating (read the full article here – http://www.ten-percent.co.uk/bad-locums-avoiding-them-and-bad-law-firms/)

Making a Move – how to know when it is time
The autumn is traditionally a time when a number of staff at law firms start to look around for work. Our candidate registrations tend to pick up at this time of year as solicitors return from their summer holidays having had time to think about their future and alternative options.

Here is our guide to knowing if you should make a move – read more here: http://www.ten-percent.co.uk/making-a-move-is-it-really-time/

Legal Job Market Update
June 2016. What a month. I suspect it will always be remembered as the month when something fairly seismic occurred, but quite what this will be is another matter! Will it be remembered as the start of the UK’s exit from the EU, the month when England lost to Iceland and finally worked out that Harry Kane can’t take corners or free kicks, or the the month when sterling lost its status as a world-leading currency? Is it the start of a glorious new future for the UK as an independent nation setting alluring tax rates or the descent into chaos as financial companies queue up to leave and relocate to Dublin or Frankfurt? to read more of this article please click this link- http://www.ten-percent.co.uk/legal-job-market-report-july-6th-2016/

The Unlimited Recruitment service offers law firms the chance to recruit as many permanent or locum candidates as needed over a period of 5 years in return for a monthly payment. It works in the same way as an insurance policy. There are no restrictions on numbers (although vacancies have to exist and we do operate a fair usage policy – so far never used).

However with Ten Percent Unlimited you simply pay a monthly fee.

Advantages? Plenty – including fixed price recruitment, very large cost savings and access to a large bank of candidates.

Disadvantages? One. You have to commit to a full 5 years without an option to cancel and success cannot be guaranteed (it would be impossible for any recruitment process to do this).

About Ten-Percent Legal Recruitment
We are a specialist legal recruiter, covering both permanent and locum roles across the whole of the UK. Over 11,000 lawyers are registered with us and we have access to a range of external and internal job boards and websites where we do not have candidates available ourselves. We also assist with recruitment advice and assistance, regularly advising partners and practice managers on suitable salary and package levels.

Our company is unique for a number of reasons, including the fact that we are not shy to publish our fee structure and also donate a chunk of our profits to charity each year. We offer unlimited permanent and locum recruitment for a fixed monthly fee or one-off fees depending on the job. We donate 10% of our profits annually to charity, hence our name.

We have three recruitment consultants, Jonathan Fagan, Clare Fagan and Pete Gresty, together with our finance director Pearl McNamara. As a team we have over 40 years of experience in the legal profession.

Ten-Percent Legal Recruitment also owns Interim Lawyers, a specialist locum service. We operate an outsourced UK based typing service as well – www.uk-transcription.co.uk and are preferred suppliers to a number of institutional clients and law firms across the UK and overseas.

The Ten-Percent Group of Legal Recruitment websites gives 10% of annual profits to charity. We have carried on with this tradition since we formed the company 15 years ago. So far about £80,000 has been donated to charities in the UK and Africa including LawCare.

We hope you have enjoyed reading our newsletter and look forward to hearing from you if we can assist further.

1/3 of Bar Course Pupils get Pupillage
New analysis, reported in the Gazette this week, has shown that almost 5,000 students started the course between 2012 and 2014, 72% of these have passed so far, and 35% of BPTC graduates have gained pupillage since completing the course between 2011 and 2013.

With the cost ranging from £12,500 up to £18,000 (mostly at the upper end), this means that in two years the course generated up to £90 million in course fees for the various providers and from this only roughly 1,500 are likely to actually have succeeded in gaining pupillage and as a result succeeding with the aim of the course.

The Bar course (and the LPC) should both carry large warnings in any literature – if you spend £10-18k on this course there is a very good chance you will not progress your legal career any further than if you had given the whole lot to charity. It has always been the same for the bar – you need connections and achievements plus experience. For solicitors connections help but are not essential, but again you do need achievements plus experience. The LPC and BPTC are just hoops to jump through and make very little difference to chances of success.
